Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, better known as Virginia Tech, is a public land grant polytechnic university in Blacksburg, Virginia, USA. Although it is a comprehensive university with many departments, the agriculture, engineering, architecture, forestry, and veterinary medicine programs are considered to be among its strongest. Virginia Tech is one of the few public universities in the United States, as one of six senior military colleges (five are public, one private), which continues to maintain a corps of cadets (a full-time military training component).

In addition to its research and academic programs, Virginia Tech is known for its campus and location in the New River Valley of southwestern Virginia in the Blue Ridge Mountains, a part of the Appalachian Mountains. The university's public profile has also been raised significantly in recent years by the success of its football program.

The Virginia Tech massacre was a university shooting that took place as two separate attacks approximately two hours apart on April 16, 2007 on the campus of the Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University in Blacksburg, Virginia, United States. A gunman killed 32 people and injured 29 before committing suicide, making it the deadliest mass shooting in modern U.S. history.

The gunman, Cho Seung-hui, was born in South Korea and grew up in Northern Virginia. He had permanent residence status and was a fourth-year English major at Virginia Tech.
